Most conventional grid-connected solar systems shut down when utility power is lost. That safety behavior protects utility workers and the public. Solar panels alone generally do not provide usable household power during an outage.

An existing solar installation may be a candidate for battery backup or another properly engineered outage-power solution—but there is no universal “hack,” package, or switch that is compatible with every system. The right answer depends on what is already installed and what the owner actually needs to keep operating.

Preserve what works. Correct what doesn’t. Add only what moves the owner toward the outcome they actually need.

Start with the outage outcome

“Backup power” can mean very different things. One owner may need refrigeration, lights, communications, and a well pump for several hours. Another may need medical equipment, heating controls, or a home office through a multiday outage. Whole-home operation, large motors, electric resistance heating, air conditioning, and EV charging can require substantially more power and stored energy than a critical-load system.

  • Which loads are essential, and which can remain off?
  • What are their running power and starting-surge requirements?
  • How many hours or days of autonomy are needed?
  • Can solar recharge the battery during the outage, and under what conditions?
  • Is a generator or another backup source part of the resilience plan?
  • What budget, space, noise, maintenance, and fuel constraints matter?

Then assess the existing system

A responsible retrofit review identifies the installed modules, inverter or microinverters, service equipment, disconnects, interconnection arrangement, monitoring history, warranties, firmware, available documentation, and the owner’s utility tariff. It also checks equipment condition, usable space, environmental constraints, and whether the existing system is performing as expected before anything is replaced.

Depending on the verified equipment and project goals, a qualified designer may consider AC-coupled storage, DC-coupled storage, replacement of an existing inverter, a listed integrated energy-storage system, generator integration, or a staged critical-load approach. These are architecture categories—not site-specific recommendations.

Compatibility must be proven

An inverter, battery, transfer equipment, controls, and protective devices cannot be assumed compatible merely because each component is sold separately or individually certified. The complete energy-storage system, its permitted use, manufacturer instructions, ratings, communications, protection, and listing must be evaluated together. Existing warranties and manufacturer support also matter.

Permits, utility rules, and qualified installation

Outage-power retrofits can affect service equipment, grounding, overcurrent protection, rapid shutdown, transfer and isolation functions, fire-safety requirements, interconnection documents, and utility billing treatment. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, utility, building, equipment, and scope.

A qualified, appropriately licensed installer must verify the site, complete regulated design work, obtain required permits and utility approvals, install the system, coordinate inspection, and commission the final operating modes. What an honest assessment produces

  1. A documented inventory of the existing system and unresolved evidence gaps.
  2. A prioritized outage-load list and required operating duration.

  4. A staged plan showing what can remain, what needs correction, and what—if anything—should be added.
  5. Questions and documents a licensed installer needs to verify before quoting or construction.
